In a statement released Wednesday, Arday described the recent scrutiny as exceeding the bounds of scholarly disagreement. He cited the toll that relentless accusations and public commentary have taken on him and his family as the primary reason for his decision to step down. The Good Law Project, a campaign group supporting Arday, distributed his statement. Previously, the group circulated a letter signed by over two dozen academics and politicians characterizing the allegations against Arday as a smear campaign intended to undermine black individuals in influential positions.

Background of Appointment

Arday was 37 years old when he was appointed as a professor at Cambridge in 2023. His rise to the position was noted for his personal history of overcoming developmental delays, autism, and dyslexia. Arday has previously stated that these challenges left him non-verbal until age 11 and illiterate until his late teens.
