The Ukrainian General Staff estimates Russia has lost over 1.4 million troops since February 2022, while Western analysts suggest a significant disparity between Russian and Ukrainian losses.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on July 29 that Russia has lost approximately 1,443,450 troops since the start of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This total includes 1,310 casualties recorded over the previous 24-hour period.

Reported Russian Equipment Losses

In addition to personnel casualties, the report details extensive losses of Russian military hardware. These figures include 12,227 tanks, 25,044 armored combat vehicles, and 46,962 artillery systems. The inventory of lost equipment also lists 1,973 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,521 air defense systems, 439 aircraft, and 354 helicopters. Further losses reported by the General Staff include 34 ships and boats, two submarines, 2,063 unmanned ground systems, 432,778 operational-tactical UAVs, and 127,181 vehicles and fuel tanks.

Comparative Casualty Estimates

Ukraine has not disclosed its own military casualty figures, citing operational secrecy. However, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has estimated the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian casualties to be between 2:1 and 2.5:1. A January 2026 report from the CSIS estimated that Ukraine has suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 total casualties between February 2022 and December 2025, with an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
