A presidential decree has suspended the special consumption tax on diesel in Türkiye until September 1, when a phased reinstatement will begin.

Türkiye has removed the special consumption tax (ÖTV) on diesel fuel through the end of August, according to a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on Thursday. The measure also excludes diesel from the country's sliding-scale tax adjustment system, which was originally implemented to mitigate the impact of rising oil prices following the start of the U.S.-Israel-Iran war.

Phased Tax Reinstatement Schedule

Starting September 1, the diesel tax will be reinstated through incremental monthly increases of TL 3. The tax will be set at TL 6 per liter for October, TL 9 per liter for November, and TL 12 per liter for December. By January 1, 2027, the tax will reach TL 13.9006 per liter, returning to the level in place before the tax was removed.

Changes to Sliding-Scale System

While diesel has been removed from the sliding-scale tax adjustment system, gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will remain under the mechanism until October 1. The government plans to abolish the sliding-scale system entirely on that date. These adjustments occur as global energy prices experience significant fluctuations amid concerns regarding stalled U.S.-Iran conflict resolution talks.
