While Kosovo is approaching the local elections scheduled for June 7, the political scene is entering a new phase of open conflicts between the authorities and the opposition, as well as former allies within the Albanian political bloc. Although the campaign has not formally started yet, the political atmosphere on the ground is already taking the shape of an intense pre-election battle, with mutual accusations of abuse of institutions, concentration of power and endangerment of democracy. At the center of the latest political conflict were former Kosovo president Vjosa Osmani, leader of the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo (LDK) Ljumir Abdižiku and the Self-Determination Movement of Aljbin Kurti. Formerly close political collaborators – Osmani as president and Kurti as prime minister – are now political opponents. The deterioration of relations occurred after Kurti did not support the possibility of Vjosa Osmani running again for the president of Kosovo, which, according to some analysts, further accelerated the political distance between the two parties. The opposition accuses Kurti of centralizing power, concentrating political power "at one address", collapsing democratic mechanisms and abusing institutions and laws. On the other hand, Kurti and Self-Determination insist on the rhetoric of the "rule of law", accusing the previous authorities and the opposition of corruption and long-term failures of Kosovo. In mutual accusations, Serbia remains an unavoidable political topic. In an interview for the show "Fidani" on Klan Kosova, recorded while driving a car with journalist Fidan Jupoli, both Osmani and Abdižiku talked about their relationship with Kurti, but also about the events after the armed conflict in Banjska in September 2023.
