These developments follow a threat from US President Donald Trump to retaliate against Iranian forces for any attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Attacks on Shipping and Regional Tensions

The UK Maritime Trade Operation (UKMTO) reported that an unknown projectile struck a tanker off the coast of Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, causing a fire. The Saudi Press Agency confirmed the Encelia was hit while sailing in the Red Sea, noting that all crew members were safe. The Houthis stated the vessels were targeted for violating a maritime blockade they recently imposed on Saudi Arabia, which they described as retaliation for actions in Yemen.

US Military Response and Iranian Retaliation

US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that its latest strikes targeted Iranian maritime capabilities, drone storage facilities, and coastal surveillance sites. In response, Iranian state media reported that the Revolutionary Guard closed the Strait of Hormuz following an explosion, claiming they stopped three oil tankers from passing. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi warned of an 'eye for an eye' policy, while Iranian state media reported two deaths in southern Iran following the US strikes.
