Despite leading the club to a Carabao Cup victory in March 2025, Howe faced increasing friction regarding recruitment policy and organizational control following the departure of former co-owner Amanda Staveley and multiple sporting directors.

Shifting Internal Dynamics

Howe, who previously held significant authority over recruitment and daily operations, saw his influence wane as the club’s ownership structure and management evolved. The departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell in June 2025 marked a turning point, as the club moved toward a new recruitment strategy focused on younger players with high resale potential.

Financial Pressures and Transfers

Newcastle faced challenges meeting football spending rules, leading to a Uefa settlement agreement in May. To balance the books, the club sold players including Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. Howe struggled to replace key departures, including Alexander Isak, who moved to Liverpool for £125m. Subsequent signings, such as Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, failed to fully compensate for the loss of established talent.

Strategic Pivot

Under current sporting director Ross Wilson, the club has shifted its focus to acquiring young prospects, recently signing Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Touré, Aladji Bamba, and Sean Steur. While the club aims for global status by 2030, the disconnect between these long-term goals and the current squad's performance contributed to Howe's decision to depart.
