Maine Democrats officially selected former state Senate President Troy Jackson as their Senate nominee during a state convention in Bangor on Saturday. Jackson replaces Graham Platner, who withdrew from the race earlier this month following a sexual assault allegation, which he denied. The nomination sets up a 101-day campaign against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, who is seeking a sixth term in a race viewed as critical for Democratic efforts to gain control of the Senate.

Convention Results and Candidate Selection

The nominating convention was organized following the departure of Platner, a political newcomer and Marine veteran who had previously won the Democratic primary. Jackson emerged as the clear choice after his delegate supporters dominated recent county meetings and his primary opponents withdrew from contention. During the convention, Maine Democratic Party Chair Charlie Dingman announced that Jackson secured 566 of the 571 ballots cast.

Campaign Focus Against Senator Collins

In his acceptance remarks, Jackson outlined his platform, criticizing Senator Collins for her voting record on healthcare, tax policy, and judicial confirmations. He argued that the incumbent has failed to address economic concerns such as the cost of groceries and gas, and he positioned himself as a fighter who would prioritize the needs of Maine residents. Democrats view the Maine seat as a key opportunity to reach their goal of netting four additional seats in the Senate this fall.
